Statement by the Hon. Ann Vanstone KC
Commissioner, Independent Commission Against Corruption

Last December I issued a public statement announcing that, as part of the Lobbying and Influence Initiative currently being undertaken, the Commission would be holding a public forum to further explore the issues raised by the topic.

The public forum will take place on the morning of Thursday 9 May 2024, and will take the form of a panel discussion. Jodeen Carney, Commissioner of Equal Opportunity SA, will facilitate that discussion.

The panel will comprise experts and those with significant practical experience in matters relating to lobbying and influence of public officials including, Deputy Commissioner David Wolf, Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission Victoria, Associate Professor Dr Yee-Fui Ng (Monash University), the Hon Christopher Pyne (Pyne and Partners), a representative of the Centre for Public Integrity, and Mr David Washington of Solstice Media.

The event will have an invited in-person audience and will be live-streamed, with opportunities for attendees to ask questions of the panel.

The panel’s discussion will centre upon themes which have arisen in the research undertaken by the Commission to date, and in the various submissions received by the Commission following the release of our Discussion Paper and the appearance of an opinion piece in InDaily.

I eagerly anticipate this event, which I am confident will be of assistance in elucidating the integrity issues associated with lobbying and influencing activity, and in exploring practical ways to help mitigate the associated risks.
